Recycling demolition waste: transforming rubble into reusable material on construction sites

Demolition and renovation rubble is not just a cost to be managed: it is material that, when crushed and calibrated correctly, can be reused on the same construction site where it was produced. Recycling aggregates on site reduces the volumes to be disposed of, cuts down on the costs of sourcing virgin material, and improves the operational autonomy of the construction site, in compliance with current regulations.

What does it mean to recycle aggregates on site?

Disposal and recycling are not the same thing. Disposal means delivering the material to an authorized facility, paying for transport and disposal fees.

Recycling means processing the material on site, reducing it to calibrated granules, and reusing it directly on the construction site where it was produced, where regulatory and operational conditions allow.

The crushing of aggregates is the technical step that makes recycling possible: without volume reduction and grain size calibration, demolition material remains bulky waste.

With a jaw crusher, it becomes a usable aggregate.

How the crushing and recycling process works

  • Crushing and volume reduction

The demolition material (concrete, bricks, natural stone, ceramics) is fed into the jaw crusher, which reduces it into manageable pieces. This step significantly reduces the volume of the material, making both temporary storage on site and any residual transport to recovery plants more efficient.

  • Particle size calibration

The adjustment of the crusher slot determines the particle size of the output material. Fine particle sizes (6-10 mm) are suitable for leveling and sub-bases; medium particle sizes (12-16 mm) for filling; larger particle sizes for drainage and stabilization. The choice of the right particle size depends on the intended end use and the technical specifications of the project.

  • Reuse of material where permitted

Under certain conditions and in compliance with current regulations, crushed and calibrated material can be reused directly on site as sub-base, excavation fill or stabilisation. The conditions for reuse (including the possible cessation of waste status) depend on the type of material, the EER/CER code, and the applicable authorizations. For a concrete assessment, please contact your environmental consultant.

What can be recycled

Crunchy crushers process rigid and brittle mineral materials, which make up the largest proportion of construction and demolition waste. Bricks, concrete, ceramics, natural stone, and glass can all be processed, with variations in yield depending on the hardness of the material and the required particle size.

For hard stone materials (marble, granite, basalt, porphyry, quartzite), the reference model is Crunchy Compact Stone, specifically designed to withstand the hardness and abrasiveness of these materials.

    Hard stone materials

When the material to be recycled includes hard stones, stone processing waste, or marble and granite coverings, Crunchy Compact Stone is the right machine: it has the same compactness as the standard Compact, with components sized for the hardness and abrasiveness of the stone industry.

Normativa sul recupero inerti

The recovery of aggregates from demolition is governed by Legislative Decree 152/2006 and by technical regulations on End of Waste criteria for recycled aggregates. The conditions for the reuse of crushed material, its possible cessation of waste status, and traceability requirements depend on the operating context, the EER/CER code, and the applicable authorizations.
